Monday Minute

What a great weekend! God has great plans ahead and I am pumped about it. Here is just a recap of some of the things that have been going on this past week.

• We spent a few days at the beach on Friday and Saturday. It was a nice break to enjoy the water (and surf some small waves).
• I watched Jaws and started Jaws 2 last night in honor of “Shark Week!”
• The church unveiled its proposed name, “Watermark” last night! We are excited about the future of the church! More to come on this later…
• Trying to finish long range plans this month for the coming year. Praying for God’s direction
• I’m excited for baptism this next week! It is awesome to see lives changed.
• Thankful that my wife has had the opportunity to lead worship while Tim and Em are out. She is doing a great job of leading worship!

Refuge Student Ministry

We unveiled our new name as a student ministry last night! The students were excited about the meaning and direction of “Refuge!”

Here is a snapshot of our vision!

“On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.” Psalm 62:7

Refuge means…a safe place, act of turning to for assistance or security, a shelter from danger or hardship

The Refuge mission is to…Lead students into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ

Our Strategy:

1. Believe – Students surrendering their lives to Jesus alone for salvation (Love God)

Environment of…

- Gospel – Students learning how to live and share the gospel
- Love – Motivated by God’s love to SHOW love to everyone

Luke 19:10 “For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.”

2. Belong – Students finding community and encouragement through Christ-like relationships. (Love Each Other)

Environment of…

- Acceptance – Every student is be accepted
- Hope – Relationships built on hope

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11

“I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”  Psalm 91:2

3. Become – Students becoming like Christ through serving (Serve the World)

Environment of…

- Leaders – Students leading students to find refuge in God
- Obedience – Students obeying God’s authority

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

Three questions to continually ask:

1. Have you SURRENDERED your life to Christ?
2. Are you building Christ-like RELATIONSHIPS with others?
3. What are you doing to become like Christ through serving?

A Leader’s Character – Part 1

The first character trait that a Christian leader should possess is integrity. Integrity is the most important aspect of leadership. Without integrity the ministry will eventually crumble and hurt the Lord’s work. There are many good examples in the Bible, but Daniel was a man that stood strong in his convictions.

In Daniel 6:10, He prayed three times a day and continued in that openly knowing that it could cost him his life. Daniel’s integrity was the foremost key to his ministry. Daniel’s life showed integrity even when he was a young man in the king’s palace. He abstained from the delicacies and showed that his integrity was making the small choices. The only way integrity can be upheld is making small decisions each day to surrender fully to God.

Integrity is not built up overnight, and many times the person has to grow and learn what it takes to be a leader. Daniel later on in life, continued following the Lord even when a law was made to worship only the king. King Darius knew of Daniel’s faith and that when Daniel was cast to the lion’s, God would protect him through it all. The end result of Daniel’s integrity is that God was glorified. At times a leader will have to take a stand on a controversial subject, and with the Bible as the basis, that leader can effectively stand strong. The importance of integrity is monumental to a lifelong passion to love God, love others, and serve the world.

Monday Minute

What a great week! God has been doing some awesome things in the lives of people.

• I videoed three college/graduate age friends for baptism videos. My church shoots a video prior to each person’s baptism where they share their story of how they came to know Christ! It is awesome to see.
• Our Family Lake trip was a lot of fun! It was a great day to kick back and relax with the students and their families.
• Big changes in store for the church – I will unveil the changes this next week!
• I really enjoyed the CORE student leadership team meeting on Sunday afternoon. It blesses my life to see students step up and lead. Our “Back to School” Lock in will be student led (student sharing gospel, leading worship, planned activities).
• We are adding new small groups this fall!
• I’m excited about the leaders that have just committed to becoming small group leaders and co-leaders.
• I am halfway through my 8 week classes at seminary. My prayer is that I’ll finish this Fall (and still not go crazy from all the work)
• Praying for Tim and Emily Flowers – they are at the hospital waiting for Julia to be born
• We are revamping the student area – if you have any ideas or resources for a coffee shop look, please let me know!?

The Missing Links in Student Ministry

For the past 5 or so years I’ve had the privilege to be in student ministry. I have learned a lot since I jumped into ministry.

I thought I’d share a few missing links that I wish I knew when I started in ministry.

- Expectations – I am learning to not have expectations. I know it sounds bad. I have learned to appreciate each staff I have worked with and appreciate their differences and personality. God has worked in my life to pray for and encourage those I serve alongside with in ministry. Life is too short to hold grudges or be critical of fellow ministers!

- Relationship-driven ministry BEATS Event-driven ministry every time - My tendency is to plan my calendar to be packed full of events. I have learned that having a packed calendar does not mean that I’m filling students spiritually. The “American Dream” of student ministry is to keep the students “motivated” from one event to another. My prayer is that students will learn that God’s Word is ENOUGH for them to grow spiritually. Events help in this process but are not the goal. Events can not build relationships and keep students strengthened through the “roller coaster” school years.

- Focus on the students who want to become leaders. I spent a lot of time trying to convince/motivate/almost beg students (and parents) who did now want to surrender and follow Christ. I’m not talking about students who are un-churched, but the ones who are members. I find that the hardest people to lead are the ones who have been in church their entire lives and have become “numb” to the movement of God. Jesus set an example of investing in 12 disciples (only 11 graduated) and spent a majority of his time with Peter, James, and John. I’ve learned that I can speak and pray for students to follow Jesus, but at the end of the day they are going to have to make the decision! Disciple and train students to reach their friends and families for Christ and then SET THEM LOOSE!

- Encourage and Equip Parents – Parents are one of the missing links in student ministries in the past 10 years. At first I thought parents needed to “get with it!” Now I realize more and more that they are the main spiritual influences in their student’s lives. An ongoing issue that I deal with are parents who allow their 12-16 year old student  date whomever their student decides is “cute.” Parents need to set boundaries when it comes to relationships, media, and friends! If they do not set biblical convictions in the home, most of the time what message series we are talking about will not sink into their hearts.

- Mentoring – Relationships are the key component for students to learn how to live for Christ. I am changing up my plans to fit more students into my schedule. I plan on taking students with me when I go places. Simple steps to build relationships make an impact. Mentors in my life always spent time listening to my problems, needs, prayer requests and more. I pray that I can do a better job at this in the future.

- Quality time with Cassidy – Ministry can be draining. Setting times to unwind and just talk to one another is a priority in our marriage. I have learned through experience that I must plan to make time for my wife or ministry will plan it for me. It is easy to “spiritualize” and spend all my time working and talking about ministry. The problem is that my main calling is to lead my family spiritually! If that fails, then it is a domino effect on ministry. My prayer is that I will do a better job of loving my wife (like Christ loves the church) and serving God together!
